Writing Your First Ebook

Writing your first ebook may seem like a daunting task. But like many projects, it won't seem so bad when it's broken down into manageable chunks. Not all projects are successful, so don't be too disappointed if your first ebook isn't a best seller. Whatever the outcome of your first ebook, you can at least say 'You did it'.

Like many things in life, what often seems impossible can be attained with the right attitude and the right equipment. It could be a marathon run, climbing a mountain or finding parking space at the supermarket.

If you want to play golf, you will need clubs, balls and some practice. There's no guarantee you will become another Tiger Woods but you will become a golfer.

If you want to write an ebook, you will need a computer, software and some directions. Assuming you have a computer and software or access to them, here are some directions.

Establish Your Reasons

Your reasons for wanting to write an ebook will have a major impact on your success.
It may be for financial gain, promoting a business, advancing your career, education, self satisfaction or something entirely different. Whatever your reasons, write them down. It will help to motivate you if the going gets tough.

Choose Your Subject

There are countless subjects that you can write about. It's wise to choose something you have an interest in or knowledge of. It is worthwhile spending time on this. The more you know about your subject, the easier it will be to write about.

Choose Your Title

After you've chosen your subject, you'll need a title for the ebook. It's worth writing down a few different ones before deciding on the one you'll use. This will help to keep your focus and may give you some other ideas. The title should give a clear indication of the content in your book. A catchy title may help to sell it, but remember to balance this with clarity to keep it in context. I've written down two examples. Feel free to use them if you have a sense of humor.

A Clubbers Paradise - Golfing in Ibiza
20 Minutes Late – The Future of Trains

Choose Your Audience

The subject and style of your writing will determine your audience. Decide who your desired audience will be. Age, gender, culture, social background and education are factors you may want to consider. What you write should be targeted at your desired audience.

Write Your Thesis Statement

Although it's possible to write your ebook without a 'thesis statement', it is not recommended. If you are unfamiliar with this term, there are many sources available that will provide you with all the details you need. Unfortunately, there are some differences of opinion that may lead to confusion.

The 'thesis statement' deserves a separate article of its own but for now I have written a general definition of a thesis statement for ebooks. This may leave the door open for criticism but is a small price to pay if it removes some of the confusion. More importantly, it will give you a base on which to start. Only use it as a guideline. If you want a more specific definition, Google is a good place to start your search.

A thesis statement is a sentence or two written to clearly show the reason(s) for your ebook and what you expect to write about.

Although I have referred to this as a general definition, keep in mind that your actual statement should be as specific as possible.

Think of it as the foundation for your ebook. It should contain the following:

1) Your subject
2) Your opinion on the subject
3) A supporting reason for your opinion
4) The significance of 1), 2) and 3)

Create Your Document

Now that you have the foundation, you can begin writing. A standard application like MS Word is a good choice. While you are writing your document you can revise your thesis statement at any time up until it is published. This provides a good degree of flexibility.

Choose the format and layout of your document, including chapters, headings and introductions. Dependent on your subject, you may wish to add photographs, anecdotes or testimonials that keep the reader's attention.

Since an ebook is generally read from a screen, you may want to break up the text more than in a printed book. Experiment with a few different fonts and look at other ebooks for ideas you can use. Spell check and save your document regularly. MS Word has an auto recovery feature. This is useful if you don't save the document on a regular basis and later experience a system crash. Always backup your document. As a precaution you should also keep a copy on another media such as CD.

Dont Overlooked Ebooks As The Path To Online Prosperity

The ebook revolution is here! The Internet now makes it possible to come up with an idea, turn it into an ebook, distribute it over the Internet, and start making money - all in 30 days or less. In the offline world, 30 days wouldn't typically even be long enough to start getting rejection letters back from publishers. We say this with confidence because we have both gone from book idea to book sales in a matter of weeks - not once, but many times.
Between us, we have 10 ebooks currently selling on the Net. Several of our books have brought us five figures in income. Jim holds the record between us with one release that made an astounding $43,000 in 30 days.

Here are two discouraging myths you should be aware of:

Myth #1 - It takes a lot of money to promote an ebook.
Fact: It doesn't. Despite what anyone says to the contrary, online information publishing is still the fastest, cheapest and easiest way for the "little" guy to earn a nice living online with virtually no risk and very little money (less than
$100).

Myth #2: You have to be a writer to make money with ebooks.
Fact: You don't have to be a "writer" in order to create a best selling ebook - and it often helps if you're not!

Maybe you've heard that ebooks don't sell. That's not entirely a myth; in a way, that's true. What sells in bookstores will generally not sell well on the Internet. Although author J.K. Rowling has sold more than 100 million copies of her "Harry Potter" books worldwide, it's unlikely she would do well selling her stories in ebook form.

But ebooks sell like hotcakes when they contain PRACTICAL information in ready-to-use form. Not pages of pages of long, flowing prose like you find at Borders and Barnes and Noble. On the Net, people buy step-by-step, cut-to-the-chase information they can use to solve problems in their everyday lives.

eBooks on how to negotiate the best price on a car, how to sell your home without paying a real estate agent, how to build muscle mass quickly, and other narrowly focused topics that solve a problem, are selling VERY well - at this very moment!

Why is this so? Because the main reason people are online in the first place is to find information - 9 times out of 10, according to a landmark survey.

So if you can interest people in extending their search past looking for free information into purchasing an information-rich, well-organized, ready-made SOLUTION to a pressing problem, you can sell ebooks... You can sell a LOT of them.

Jim has sold more than 5,000 ebooks in the last 10 months. David's publishers have asked him not to reveal how many ebooks he's sold, but just type his first and last name into Google and you'll find more than 20,000 Web pages where his name appears. The vast majority of those pages have something to do with one of his ebooks.

One more thing: It doesn't need to take very long to write an ebook. Why? Because many "book books" are like encyclopedias in prose form - they cover everything imaginable about the topic.

eBooks aren't like that. They go right to the meat of what people need to know to solve a problem. They have information about everything necessary to solve a problem, but no "filler"
information that takes so long to write - and takes readers so long to sift through.

Here are four mistakes ebook authors make that typically reduce or prevent sales:

1. They don't write to a specific, target audience.
The biggest mistake most ebook authors make is they don't clearly define, identify and visualize who they are selling their ebook to.
On the Web, to be successful, you must write to a specific group of people who have specific interests. Make sure that you know exactly who is going to buy your ebook, and where you can find them online.

2. They don't automate as many of their business activities as possible. Selling ebooks, though it is highly profitable, is not a business where you make hundreds of dollars per sale.

Automate everything you can - credit card processing, ebook delivery, as much technical support as possible.

3. They don't have a compelling title for their ebook. Use words that convey the benefit of what's in the ebook, as well as words your audience is familiar with.

A bad title for an ebook: "Online Marketing for Newbies." A good title for the same ebook: "97 Ways to Promote Your Website - No Experience Required."

4. They try to cover too much ground. Many ebook authors convey a lot of information but don't cover anything in-depth. As a result, they never fully explain anything in enough detail to provide any useful value to their readers.

As long as you are aware of these mistakes and put in a little effort to avoid them, your chances of success are VERY high.

So, if you know a lot about something - or even if you don't - you can put together and market an ebook quickly, and make a lot of money quickly as well. The large traditional publishers may never understand or agree with this, but that's actually to your benefit. It keeps the playing field level and offers you, the entr epreneurial author, unlimited opportunities for many years to come.

Three Very Important Reasons Why The Little Guy Is Best For Ebook Publishing

I was asked by several perspective customers on why they should use my small start-up ebook publishing business to publish their books.  I was more than ready to give them 3 very good examples why and have them here for anyone looking to self publish an ebook online:

1. One reason why the little guy is a better choice over the bigger guys is the cost for final draft.
A close friend of mine recently self published his book with outskirts press. He ordered the "ruby" option because of it's low cost. Being that he was on a small budget to begin with, he believed the $699 price and what was included with it was simply ideal. He would email them the file, pick out the font, page color, cover design, give them the $699 and a completely finished book would come out on the other side, but he could have not been farther from the truth. The initially $699 price tag outskirts innocently displays on it's website to lure in a customer on a low end alternative, ended up costing him over $1000 when it was all said and done. You see, most newbie writers and those looking for a low priced way to get published, fail to realize the details of the actual book creation process. Simply running the file through a spell check and aligning margins is simply not enough. What the low end customer doesn't know from these big guys is that attention to detail; particularly shifts in sentences and paragraph structure, are simply not included in the price. My friend was told that 50 fixes are free and anything over will cost more. Okay, so how many errors could there possibly be right? I mean you did the spell check, you made sure you have the margins just right and you spent untold hours even days making sure more or less you have a ball park figure of page count. However, there were more than 50 errors anyway. What the issue was did not stem from my friend, but from the company itself. Once the errors were pointed out to the company to fix, they ran it through their text processing again only to spew out more misaligned sentences, paragraphs and misspelled words. This seems to either be a lack of understanding of how their software works or deliberate price gouging the poor defenseless customer only looking to save a buck.

2. The Second Reason Why using a small guy is better that a big guy is availability.
Most bigger companies gives you and email address and leaves you hanging for extended lengths of time. I mean they have gotten so big that they seem to have little time and have forgotten about their most vital reason why they are in existence in the first place... their customers. The smaller guy will go above and beyond for their clients and customers and are flexible on things the bigger guys seem to keep a calculator for.
3. The third and final reason above all is customization.

Bigger companies tend to bulk everything in a "package deal" If you have ever been involved in any package deals, you know that some stuff in the package is desired, while most you can live without. It's like your cable provider. You like the news, sports and movie channels, but you could live without seeing a bunch of young people getting drunk on the Jersey Shore. A smaller company will provide and focus on what matters to your specific needs and come through better on what is uniquely important to you.

How To Publish An Ebook On The Amzon Kindle Ereader

The Amazon Kindle is a portable e-book reader. More precisely, it is a software, hardware and network platform developed by Amazon.com subsidiary that utilizes wireless connectivity to enable users to shop for, download, browse, and read e-books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, and other digital media in some countries.
Several hardware devices support this platform, including a main "Kindle" line and a parallel "Kindle DX" line. The most recent Kindle device is the third incarnation of the main line, officially named "Kindle", but usually referred to as "Kindle 3". Kindle 3 was released on August 27, 2010.User reports indicate that the new display, with E Ink Pearl technology on the Kindle 3 is noticeably superior to previous generations.
The Kindle DX line features larger screens than the main Kindle line. It is marketed as more suitable for displaying newspaper and textbook content; however, no Kindle model preserves the print edition page numbers used when citing sources in school papers and scholarly research. Amazon has also introduced Kindle software for use on various devices and platforms, including Microsoft Windows, iOS, BlackBerry, Mac OS X (10.5 onwards), Android and Windows Phone 7.
The Kindle hardware devices use an e-ink electronic paper display that features 16 shades of grey. This allows for a long battery life and easy readability. Content for the Kindle can be purchased online and downloaded wirelessly in some countries, using either standard Wi-Fi or Amazon's 3G "Whispernet" network.Whispernet is accessible without any monthly fee or wireless subscription, although fees can be incurred for the delivery of periodicals and other content when roaming internationally beyond the customer's home country. Through a service called "Whispersync", customers can synchronize reading progress, bookmarks and other information across Kindle hardware devices and other mobile devices.
Amazon released the Kindle First Generation on November 19, 2007, for US$399 and was sold out in five and a half hours. The device remained out of stock for five months until late April 2008.
It is the only Kindle with expandable memory, via an SD card slot.
The device features a 6 inch (diagonal) 4-level grayscale display, with 250 MB of internal memory, which can hold approximately 200 non-illustrated titles.
Amazon did not sell the Kindle First Generation outside the United States.Plans for a launch in the UK and other European countries were delayed by problems with signing up suitable wireless network operators.
On February 10, 2009, Amazon announced the Kindle 2. It became available for purchase on February 23, 2009. The Kindle 2 features a text-to-speech option to read the text aloud, and 2 GB of internal memory of which 1.4 GB is user-accessible. By Amazon's estimates the Kindle 2 can hold about 1500 non-illustrated books. Unlike the Kindle First Generation, Kindle 2 does not have a slot for SD memory cards. It was slimmer than the original Kindle.
To promote the new Kindle, author Stephen King made UR, his then-new novella, available exclusively through the Kindle Store. On October 22, 2009, Amazon stopped selling the original Kindle 2 in favor of the international version it had introduced earlier in the month.
According to an early review by iFixIt, the Kindle 2 features a Freescale 532 MHz, ARM-11 90 nm processor, 32 MB main memory, 2 GB moviNAND flash storage and a 3.7 V 1530 mAh lithium polymer battery.
On November 24, 2009, Amazon released a firmware update for the Kindle 2 that it said increases battery life by 85% and introduces native PDF support.
On July 8, 2009, Amazon reduced price of the Kindle 2 from the original $359 to $299. On October 7, 2009, Amazon further reduced the price of the Kindle 2 to $259.[citation needed] The Kindle 2 was criticized for its high original retail price, compared to the $185.49 manufacturing cost estimated by iSuppli.
Kindle sales
Specific Kindle sales numbers are not released by the company, however, Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, stated in a shareholders' meeting in January 2010 that "millions of people now own Kindles."According to anonymous inside sources, over three million Kindles have been sold as of December 2009, while external estimates, as of Q4-2009, place the number at about 1.5 million. According to James McQuivey of Forrester Research, estimates are ranging around four million, as of mid-2010.The third-generation Kindle is now the bestselling product in Amazon's history, eclipsing "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7).
